Australian Open launches in the metaverse

The governing body for Australian Tennis, Tennis Australia, has partnered with decentralized platform Decentraland to host the Australian Open (AO) in the metaverse.

The tournament commenced on January 17, offering its gaming experience to fans through the combination of decentralised technology and a traditional gaming ecosystem.

The event will mark the first major sporting event in the virtual world of the metaverse, which expands the move towards mainstream adoption of blockchain technologies.

The metaverse features a selection of games, viewing screens, and stores, whereby users can purchase non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to personalize avatars.

The virtual world will be a recreation of well-known areas in Melbourne Park – where the tournament is held – including the Rod Laver Arena.

Content will be made available for users to spot their favourite players with behind-the-scenes footage from their arrival.

Live broadcasting and AO radio will be offered, exclusive clips will be provided from more than 300 cameras scattered across the park, and past imagery will showcase nostalgia from previous matches from the 70s era.

Virtual meetups will also be orchestrated with acclaimed players such as Mark Philippoussis, and there will be a chance to play games and win prizes.

Teaming up with the NFT portal, Sweet, the tennis gaming organization recently launched six NFTs aimed to pay homage to the competition.

On Janurary 12, the AO announced 6,776 NFTs, named ‘Art Balls’ on the OpenSea NFT market space. Owners of these NFTs will gain access to a digital court in Decentraland’s metaverse.

Tennis Australia NFT and metaverse project manager Ridley Plummer said he was “hoping for the success of the Australian Open with the inclusion of metaverse technology”.

He added: “The AO will continue to collaborate with Decentraland in the future for expansion into the metaverse cluster. The team is looking forward to marking its presence in the online space and promoting innovation.”

The world of the metaverse is a fast-approaching one. Projects have been steadily growing, with users seeing value in the virtual land. Earlier, in 2021, the race was on for the sale of a virtual boat, that sold for the hefty price of $650,000.

The metaverse seems to be a poignant topic for all, remember to stay safe and obtain as much knowledge as possible by researching.
