Amazon eyes Bitcoin support

Amazon is rumored to be planning to introduce Bitcoin as a viable payment method for its ecommerce platform.

Should the rumor prove true, the dominant ecommerce platform in the Western Hemisphere may start accepting Bitcoin payments before 2021 is out.

The news was first reported by City A.M., a London-based publication which spoke to an unnamed source close to the matter.

City A.M.’s source said: “This isn’t just going through the motions to set up cryptocurrency payment solutions at some point in the future – this is a full-on, well-discussed, integral part of the future mechanism of how Amazon will work.”

According to the paper, the project is ready to roll and there seems to be little doubt that Amazon will follow through. The ecommerce giant is expected to look to support other cryptocurrencies too.

This follows Amazon's job posting from a few weeks ago, when the company said that it was looking for a “Digital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead”.

Amazon has been hinting that it's looking to get involved with blockchain and crypto through numerous job postings. The platform may have been inspired by other firsts in the sector.

PayPal and Visa have been offering support for cryptocurrencies for a while now. Tesla most famously enabled the option to buy the company's vehicles with cars, although it later changed its mind, citing environmental concerns.

If you are looking to spend your Bitcoin now, you need not wait until Amazon's crypto payment options are up and running.
