Wirex expands global footprint

Crypto payments app now available in more than 40 countries after Asia-Pacific and UK expansion.

Cryptocurrency payments app Wirex is expanding its footprint in Asia-Pacific and the UK after signing a long-term global partnership with Visa.

The previous agreement between the two companies saw a crypto linked Visa debit card in the US and Wirex holding principal membership status with Visa in Europe.

Wirex will now be able to directly issue crypto-enabled debit and prepaid cards to over 40 countries.

Visa Asia Pacific head of digital partnerships Matt Wood said: “Visa wants to bring more payment options to consumers by connecting digital currencies with our network of banks and merchants.”

Despite being based in London and having its largest customer base in the UK, Wirex had previously withdrawn from the UK.

The Financial Conduct Authority's temporary registration regime ahead of a deadline to obtain full registration meant it would serve UK-based customers via a subsidiary licensed in Croatia.

Wirex APAC regional managing director Svyatoslav Gara said: “It’s great to strengthen our partnership with Visa, who have played an important role in allowing us to bridge the gap between the traditional and digital economies.

“Visa’s proven commitment to safety, security and innovation will help us to continue developing a next-generation app and card.”
