Watford FC and Sportsbet.io postpone inaugural Crypto Cup

Crypto Cup was originally scheduled for May 16 to celebrate the end of the Premier League season. However, Sportsbet.io and Watford FC announced it has now been pushed back until further notice as the world tries to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Sportsbet.io planned to host a day of debate, a football tournament and educational sessions on cryptocurrency, all in order to raise awareness on bitcoin as a viable cryptocurrency both in and out of the sports and betting realms.

Originally, the hosts had planned to invite a number of cryptocurrency experts, guest speakers and entrepreneurs to discuss the most pressing issues surrounding promoting blockchain and specifically crypto in sports.

An important issue on the agenda was going to be whether Watford should accept bitcoin and add it to its club store – a huge boost to the validity of BTC as a payment option.

Sportsbet.io founder Tim Heath spoke positively of the growing partnership between Watford FC and the sportsbook, pointing to the growing interest in bitcoin resulting directly from previous partnerships between the two. Heath further added:

“Being part of the conversation on the day with both fans and experts, exploring what the future of crypto adoption looks like and enjoying the Vicarage Road experience is a brilliant opportunity for all involved.”

Commercial director of Watford FC, Paul O’Brien said that this would be a first event of its kind for Watford FC. He didn’t hide his excitement and added that the team was looking forward to welcoming the crypto community at Vicarage Road.

With the novel coronavirus spreading however, the event has been postponed, Sportsbet.io informed in a Tweet on March 16.
