Texas BTC mining back online

Bitcoin (BTC) mining operations have regained power in Texas after the state suspended all crypto mining last week amid severely high temperatures from a heatwave.

BTC mining uses a vast number of energy-intensive supercomputers consuming equally large amounts of energy.

During the heatwave, such energy levels spiked causing the decision to pause all operations.

Power demand hit an all-time high as residents and businesses took to air conditioners to bear the change in weather.

Residents were urged by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to conserve electricity, according to local television KBTX.

ERCOT operates the grid for over 26 million customers for around 90% of the state’s power consumption.

Texas Blockchain Council president Lee Bratcher said: “The miners are all back on as of several days ago. ERCOT is back into a normal operating mode with over 3,000 megawatts (MW) of spare capacity on the grid.”

The power usage in Texas is expected to surge again this week as many keep cool with their air conditioners in the aftermath of the heatwave.

Weather conditions have caused difficulties not only in Texas but worldwide. Europe has been hit with a major heatwave over the last week causing wildfires and devastation in France, Spain and the UK.

Such extreme changes (hot or cold) can have a large impact on mining operations. Last month BTC miner Marathon Digital suspended a portion of its mining operations in Montana due to the effect of a storm.
