Technical issues persist with El Salvador’s Chivo wallet

El Salvador’s native Chivo wallet, which the government promised would enable consumers to navigate the intricacies of Bitcoin (BTC) without any challenges, is still facing technical issues.

The country moved to using BTC as a public tender a little more than two months ago.

The launch on September 7 was botched, with consumers unable to procure the app and having to seek external links to gain access to it. Even those who were lucky enough to download it experienced outages, but most said they couldn’t connect at all.

This prompted many locals to opt out of the Chivo wallet and seek other alternatives. Some stayed optimistic and were willing to give the solution another shot. One disconcerting fact has been the prevalence of identity theft.

Some consumers were shocked to find that their IDs had been used to register a Chivo wallet already, to the dismay of many first timers in the crypto world.

Speaking to Decrypt, one developer claimed that he knew many people who hadn’t downloaded the app but had been registered for it in what is clearly a brazen theft of personal information and its purposeful misuse. El Salvadorians are also finding it hard to understand how Chivo works and what its real value to daily life is.

This comes after news that El Salvador will be purchasing more BTC and even plans to issue a BTC bond in 2022, as per a report in the Wall Street Journal.

However, one of the reasons why the Chivo wallet may not always work is because of its “custodial nature”. In other words, the government may have put fail-safes in place so that whenever a person tries to transfer BTC out of Chivo and into another BTC wallet, they may experience incomplete transactions.

Amid the general confusion, the El Salvadorian government has issued assurances that it is hard at work to fix the bugs.

In the meantime, you may use your BTC recreationally at places such as Bitcasino, 1xBit or FortuneJack.
