Meta Platforms-owned social media platform Instagram has proven successful in its trial run supporting digital assets.
Last year, Meta Platforms launched a series of tests to trial the concept of NFT sharing among Instagram users by exhibiting artwork on their profiles.
On May 9 2022, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “We're starting to test digital collectibles on Instagram so that creators and collectors can display NFTs.”
Since then, the program has opened up to several creators hoping to incorporate a range of digital asset designs for the platform.
Some artists believe that with the help of Instagram's expansive reach across two billion monthly active users, NFTs could reach mainstream adoption and thus become an avenue for creating revenue.
The new web 3.0 initiative has earned praise from high-profile NFT enthusiasts Micah Johnson, Drifter Shoots, Amber Vittoria, Refik Anadol and Dave Krugman amid competition from rivals YouTube and TikTok.
Over the past few months, each aforementioned creator has successfully launched a series of collections on Instagram and sold out each time.
“Digital collectibles make a lot of sense when you consider where many of us do our social signaling”, said Krugman.
