Japanese entertainment company Square Enix has released its inaugural Ethereum (ETH) NFT game, Symbiogenesis.
The Web 3.0-based game aims to be an interactive “digital collectible art experience” involving NFT avatars.
Symbiogenesis supports a chronological narrative rather than a traditional immersive video game experience.
Players are told to “untangle the story” to navigate their NFT characters by completing missions and solving mysteries.
A Twitter post from the Symbiogenesis Twitter account read: “NFT Collectible Art Project. SYMBIOGENESIS. Untangle the Story. Spring 2023”.
The move to introduce NFT-powered games and further involvement in the blockchain space has been on Square Enix’s cards for some time.
The company first showed an interest in 2019 when Japanese President Yosuke Matsuda hinted a blockchain future was on the horizon.
A year later, Square Enix led a $2m investment round with the Ethereum-based metaverse game, The Sandbox.
The firm then entered the Web 3.0 world in 2021 with its launch of NFT “digital stickers” made for the anime and video game franchise Million Arthur on the LINE blockchain, followed by an announcement of the company's NFT plans in 2022.
