Spain looks to limit gambling advertising

In the draft, lawmakers suggest that Spain will completely phase out gambling advertising, a measure that was originally planned to be considered as a temporary measure during lockdown only, but has now been inked in as a more permanent proviso of Spain's evolving regulatory framework.

Along with restricting advertising, Spain now wants to get an approval to shutter partnerships between sports teams and gambling firms, at least in the sense where the latter display their logos on any of the merchandise of the team.

On top of this, Spain is planning to restrict any available bonuses to EUR 100 and only allow welcome bonuses, if any at all.

Since the beginning of the year, the Spanish government has been consistently aggressive towards gambling. However, lawmakers' motivation has been pure. Spain has seen a tremendous increase in gaming activity, allowing the government to have a little more clout when dealing with the industry. Spain even refused to reopen gambling venues as most other non-essential businesses began to.

While consumer safety is important, the country should seek not to alienate players who are already used to playing domestically. To achieve this, the government should tread carefully and make sure there are no abrupt changes that would send many people offshore.

Even if many players turn offshore, though, there are several provably fair casinos waiting for them.
