Segunda B soccer team buys players in Bitcoin

DUX Internacional de Madrid has made history by becoming the first soccer club to purchase a footballer in exchange for Bitcoin.

Former Real Madrid B and Levante striker David Barral has joined the Segunda B team for Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency that has been going up and down over the years, but surged dramatically in 2020 and has been keeping steady numbers throughout 2021 so far.

While the specifics of the transactions have not been shared with the general public, the purchase is interesting as it marks a new chapter in the engagement between sports clubs and soccer players, and more importantly the role that blockchain and crypto plays in it.

In an official statement, the club said: “David Barral, new player of DUX Internacional de Madrid, welcome to the infinite club! He becomes the first signing in history in cryptocurrencies. Thanks to Criptan, our new sponsor, for making it possible.”

There have been numerous sponsorships and partnerships between soccer clubs and crypto companies so far. Sportsbet.io has been one of the most prominent examples of a successful crypto company to bet a soccer club.

Other teams have sought closer engagement with fans through crypto. While some teams have been opting out of such partnerships, the majority of soccer clubs have been exploring them.

Worthwhile sportsbooks that offer crypto betting today include Cloudbet and 1xBit.
