When bitcoin started to branch away from being seen as just a speculative trading coin, one of its earliest use cases was gambling, as it still is to this day. Thousands of players tried their hand at a new breed of casino game that wasn't found at traditional sites. The likes of crash, dice and wheel of fortune-style games came to the fore, offering quick, simple wins, and these were often powered by provably fair blockchain technology.
Players had demanded something different. The frills of a luxurious online casino setting were no longer required. Complex slots, 3D table games and old-school video poker took a back seat in favour of games which put the player at the centre of a gambling community. Early iterations, such as Etheroll and Satoshi Dice, offered the big crypto wins players were after at a speed never before seen in the more regulated space, along with the added social dimensions they tended to offer.
These early dapps led the way for what was to come in today's more mature gambling environment. Bitcasino, BitStarz and the likes have evolved to resemble superior versions of the traditional online casino, while others such as WINk have stuck more to the dapp look and feel and also been successful for it.
