Professional mixed martial arts competition the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has announced plans to pay fighters bonuses in Bitcoin (BTC) in a partnership with crypto exchange Crypto.com.

BTC payments will be given out by the organization to the top three fighters (determined by votes from fans) on each UFC pay-per-view event. The bonuses will be supplied by a UFC sponsor and not by UFC itself.

During each pay-per-view event, fans can vote for the ‘fan bonus of the night’ on Crypto.com/FanBonus which is open to all users on a global scale.

Each fan will have three votes to use per pay-per-view and can vote for two users within each period. Voting opens at the start of the pay-per-view prelims, ending an hour before the end of the event.

The three fighters selected will split the sum of $60,000 worth of crypto. In a statement, Crypto.com explained the breakdown of the total amount. $30,000 will be awarded to first place, $20,000 to second and $10,000 to third, paid in BTC based on the exchange rate in US dollars.

Crypto.com chief marketing officer Steven Kalifowitz said: “Central to our partnership with UFC is creating the most unique and compelling ways for fans to connect with the sport and their favorite athletes.

“We are thrilled for this next step in our partnership with UFC and excited to build even more innovative and engaging experiences as our partnership continues.”

Crypto.com has been making headlines in the sports world for some time, not only in the world of UFC but also in the world of basketball.

In November 2021 the exchange handed over a hefty $700m for LA Lakers stadium naming rights, the same month that itself and UFC expanded its partnership to include a multi-year licensing agreement for an exclusive series of UFC NFTs.
