Scammers con $8m out of Uniswap wallets

Decentralised crypto exchange Uniswap has been targeted by an organised phishing scheme which left victims counting losses in the region of $8m.

On Monday, more than $6.5m worth of cryptocurrency, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), was drained from one wallet alone according to PeckShield after scammers promised a free air drop of 400 Uniswap tokens ($2,000).

Several users fell for the phishing techniques and connected their wallets to the illicit website, only for the scammers to drain their accounts and cause the users to suffer monumental losses.

A second user saw more than $900,000 worth of ETH and $774,000 worth of BTC sucked from their wallet, with PeckShield reporting that than four more wallets have been infected, though they are yet to be drained.

Many will be wondering how users with such vast amounts of cryptocurrency could fall for such an obvious scam. However, the method of airdropping tokens isn’t unheard of on Uniswap.

In 2020 Uniswap rewarded all users who had traded on the platform with 400 $UNI tokens, which is now worth more than $2,200.

In 2021, a similar marketing campaign saw crypto whales receive airdrops worth five and six figures.

It’s been a tough 2022 in the world of crypto but if you want to relax away from the drama you can do so at 1xBitFortuneJack, and Bitcasino.
