Portugal sees an increase in gambling revenue

In an official release recapping the first half-year, the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) has revealed that gambling revenue increased 44.2 per cent.

Sports betting revenue was one of the main drivers of gambling results in 2020, with the numbers going up 15.9 per cent despite the lack of sports betting events from March through June.

The regulator explained that the majority of sports fans seemed to be more inclined to bet in a “regulated and controlled environment,” rather than try their luck at non-state-licensed venues.

Controlled betting options exist in the crypto betting world, too, with excellent blockchain sportsbooks such as Sportsbet.io and Cloudbet always being worthwhile picks. Meanwhile, both tennis and football drove the results, with basketball still absence in the first half-year.

Online games have also seen an increase in volume. Online slots, in particular, jumped by 69.9 per cent. Registrations of new players have been steady, see-sawing between 59,000 in January and 39,000 in May, but jumping back up in June.
