Oxford City FC establishes BTC payments

English football club Oxford City is thought to be the first non-league club to allow its fans to pay for their matchday experience using digital currency.

City will accept Bitcoin (BTC) throughout the RAW Charging Stadium, allowing supporters to purchase their match day ticket as well as buy food and drink with crypto.

Earlier this year, the club agreed a back-of-shirt sponsorship deal with Island of Man-based CoinCorner and the club’s director of football expects this to be the new norm.

Oxford City director of football Justin Merritt said: “Embracing the latest technologies and innovations to ensure Oxford City FC can continue to operate as a self-sustaining club is a key part of our long-term objectives.

“It's not mandatory for people to engage with our new technology, but we believe in time paying via Bitcoin will become the new normal in English football.”

The club’s new sponsor claims to have produced ‘The Bolt Card’ the first contactless card for BTC which fans can load up and use at the ground.

CoinCorner CEO Daniel Scott said: “Innovation and forward-thinking sit at the heart of our key working objectives, just like Oxford City FC. It's pleasing to see the club become the first adopters of Bitcoin payment in the National League.

“We believe this move will set a trend across non-league and Football League divisions as digital currency establishes itself as the new normal for sports fan and eventgoers across the UK.”

The BTC payments debuted on Saturday but the club fell to defeat in front of their own fans.
