The Netherlands has been trying to launch a regulated online gaming market for several years now. Starting around 2018, the national regulator, the KSA, took an interest in unregulated gaming and beginning to issue stern fines, even against established brands such as Betsson.

Since that time, lawmakers have decided to give gambling a shot, but multiple delays have kept cropping up. The COVID-19 outbreak is the latest in a series of potholes on the road to progress.

According to Dutch Minister for Legal Protection, Sander Dekker, the launch of the regulated igaming market in the Netherlands will be delayed by a month and set for release on July 1, 2021. However, Dekker has cautioned that further delays may be necessary, citing the unpredictability of the situation.

Before the government can roll out online gambling, the Kansspelautoriteit has to make sure it has the resources and preparedness to ensure the safe execution of all online gambling operations that are planed for release in the country.

Originally, the country was preparing to launch online gambling on January 1, 2021, but several issues have pushed back the release date further in time. There have been debates over the duration of licences with some calling for just three years on each betting and gaming licence, but others requesting an extended period for all holders.

There have been a lot of concerns about responsible gambling, with operators requested to promote safe gambling practices at least once every six months and still uphold the highest safety standards in the rest of the time.

Operators such as Bitcasino and BitStarz have the proven track record to offer the highest standards of integrity and deliver great results tailored to the needs of the Dutch market. It remains to be seen whether the Dutch authorities will look to crypto as part of a regulated market, but with the niche surging in revenues of late, it’d be a surprise if they didn’t take a look.
