As the Super Bowl looms, New York is getting closer to introducing a mobile sports betting ecosystem.
The New York State Gaming Commission has issued recommendations for nine mobile sports betting operators.
They will be two alliances that will house the operators with one led by the FanDuel Sportsbook and including Bally Bet, Bet MGM and DraftKings Sportsbook.
The other one will be the one led by the Kambi Sportsbook which will include the Caesars Sportsbook, PointsBet, Resorts World, RSI and WynnBET.
Notably, Barstool Sportsbook has been so far left out as allegations of sexual misconduct have increased.
The licenses are issued for a period of ten years. However, the question remains whether New York can get the servers and the ecosystem set up on time for the big game. The Super Bowl is the crowning event of the NFL season and it usually generates a tremendous amount of betting handle.
For Senator Joseph Addabbo, a staunch supporter of mobile betting legalization in New York over the past ten years, the matter is still up in the air.
“We can have the best providers, but if you don’t have that server that actually accepts and validates the mobile sports bet, that’s the end of the game”, he said.
New York will have one of the highest tax rates on sports gambling, with the 51% rate guaranteeing excellent gains back for the state.
Addabbo who opposed the high tax pushed forward by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, remains upbeat about the state’s prospects and sports gambling though.
“People see New York as one of the sports capitals, if not the sports capital of the world, and I think there is such an appetite about us entering the sports betting arena that I think the potential is there,” he said.
He also made a bold prediction about the future of sports gambling in New York, arguing that the state would have no trouble beating New Jersey’s results.
In comparison, the Garden State is the highest-grossing betting state in the US, but this may be changing quickly now that NYS has its own betting from mobile devices authorized. While the state may miss out on the Super Bowl, it will most likely be up and running for March Madness.
