A fraudulent application promoting crypto gaming appeared and has subsequently been removed from the App Store.
The app called Jungle Runner 2k21 was targeting children by advertising itself as a “fun running game”.
The app was well-disguised and showed no signs that anything untoward was going on. Once you launched a VPN server that is part of the app, however, it immediately transformed into an online casino that allowed potentially underage individuals to gamble.
Jungle Runner 2k21 refused to use the Apple payment system, which was a violation of the store’s terms of service.
Instead, the app allowed consumers to pay with Visa or MasterCard or turn to popular cryptocurrency choices such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Litecoin.
The app is now delisted from the store, but it was reportedly there for months with the number of downloads now unknown.
Fake Apple Store apps have been known to wreak a lot of financial damage on unwitting individuals, which is a reminder to exercise vigilance when downloading and installing new apps.
