Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta has made an announcement today via a virtual presentation explaining ways to improve city government.

One of his ideas has been to allow residents to pay their taxes in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin (BTC).

The overarching plan and vision is to use technology to improve public services. Larreta explained his aim to use blockchain technology for the highest level of personal data protection, along with 12 additional goals.

During his presentation. He said: “We have the clear conviction that citizens must own their information and their documents because we trust in their capacity and they have the responsibility to do so.

“All this data flow, which is going to increase exponentially, is going to be protected by blockchain technology, the second transformation.”

The Mayor also put into perspective the city's digitalization of more than 900 procedures, with a draft of Larreta’s plan to keep utilizing decentralized digital technologies previously released on March 10.

Yesterday the Mayor took to Twitter to explain the new procedures. “People will have the possibility to digitally authenticate their identity through an application and will have access, in a single place, to their information, documentation and personal records, facilitating the management of their procedures, applications and permits”, he said.

He explained the overall aim to leverage such blockchain technologies is to “let users have control over their data” with the ideals of blockchain-powered ID services having already been discussed.

The government currently has no plans to initiate the holding of any tokens to avoid cryptocurrency-related violations and risks and instead, and will partner with payments organisations and wallets to covert cryptocurrencies.
