Adidas appears to be stepping into the metaverse after it issued a cryptic tweet on Thursday, notifying followers that it had teamed up with Coinbase over what the firm called “probably nothing”.
If that had been the only hint that Adidas is venturing into the metaverse, we might have passed it up.
However, it coincides with another tweet by The Sandbox, a metaverse game that is gaining traction and already has more than 420,000 followers on Twitter, which directly asked Adidas what they think about their “future together”.
As it turns out, Adidas had received a piece of digital land earmarked for “Adidas originals” in the game. Last week a plot of digital land in Axie Infinity, another metaverse-like game, sold for the staggering $2.48m.
Hype continued to build when an Adidas spokesperson told CityAM: “The Metaverse is currently one of the most exciting developments in digital, making it an interesting platform for Adidas”.
Adidas is unlikely to launch a metaverse world of its own, but it may want to promote its goods and wares in existing worlds such as The Sandbox or Axie Infinity.
Right now, it would be hard to speculate about what Adidas would do with its metaverse aspirations, but it looks like we may end up seeing metaverse branding before long.
