NBA deal designed to make Sorare a household name

Sorare is hoping its recent move into the US can help widen its NFT appeal.

Sorare is hoping its recent partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) will help it become a ‘household name’ within the US.

The blockchain sports game specialist first established itself within fantasy football before branching out into other sports and now has two million users across 180 countries.

Sorare allows fans to collect, trade and build reams of NFTs representing real life athletes so its move into North America – where trading card collection is so popular – makes business sense.

Sorare head of business development Michael Meltzer told SportsPro: “The NBA has some of the biggest star athletes in the world, similar to soccer, and people feel a real connection to these players.

“The ability to ‘own’ an NBA player [in the form of a digital collectible] and play fantasy sports with it [the card] is really engaging.

“I joined from DraftKings so I know the fantasy sports market really well and it was clear that Sorare’s product would translate really well to US sports which is an existing, thriving, mature fantasy market.”

Sorare already has an office in New York and has recently signed multi-year deals with Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball (MLB).

Meltzer added: “The NBA and MLB open us up to the US market which is a key priority for us but there will be heavy crossover with our soccer user base.

“Having a blockchain-based global product, with that global community, transcends a specific demographic or sport. You can have someone who started out as a soccer fan and then became an MLB fan. We have people in our community from Europe telling us they’re watching baseball for the first time – and vice versa.”
