Krafton launches blockchain gaming project

Krafton, the studio behind PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG) battle royale game and genre, has announced plans to start building Web 3.0 games on Solana.

The studio has established a long-term partnership with Solana Labs to work on various blockchain and NFT-based games that will populate the Solana network.

PUBG’s popularity has already proven Krafton’s ability to create successful gaming products. As a point of reference, the iOS and Android edition of the game has been downloaded more than a billion times, with 75 million combined downloads for PC and console since the game launched.

The game is also free-to-play which means that Krafton knows how to explore monetization in-game rather than by an upfront fee to access it and play.

Krafton already revealed plans to build a continuation of the PUBG franchise with New State Mobile.

All of these development plans are expected to also transfer to the Solana blockchain which may benefit from an acclaimed video game title before long. The Web 3.0 ecosystem will clearly be a priority, as confirmed by the developers.

“Through this cooperation, Krafton will acquire the insight needed to accelerate its investment in and output of blockchain-based experiences”, said Krafton Web 3.0 lead Hyungchul Park.

Krafton is actively pursuing other investments in the metaverse and NFT space. The company teamed up with Naver Z to build platforms based on the NFT and metaverse experiences and it has been actively pursuing opportunities in the sector.
