Kanye West files for NFT and metaverse trademarks

Rapper and producer-turned-fashion designer Kanye West has filed 17 trademark applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office related to his alias, Yeezus.

The filings indicate an intention to enter the Web3 space, including the mention of metaverse experiences, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and non-fungible assets.

West’s apparent ambition towards NFTs comes after the entertainer shared an Instagram post in January saying: “Do not ask me to do a f*cking NFT”.

Despite the handwritten statement, the artist’s views could now change as he takes the step into the crypto world, especially as one of the 17 filings focused around “providing an online marketplace for buyers of crypto and/digital collectibles, currencies, tokens, and assets”.

However, the specific type of NFTs that West will work with or the kind of metaverse experiences he may deliver have not been confirmed.

All applications filed on May 27 fall under the use of the Yeezus brand (the name of West’s 2013 album).

Josh Gerben, trademark attorney at Gerben Intellectual Property, tweeted the news yesterday. Not only do the applications cover a range of crypto related products, but they also span outside the Web3 space with clothing, amusement parks, cosmetics, video games and more.

NFTs, crypto and metaverse experiences have become increasingly popular not only in the art and fashion industry, but in sport and music too. West will enter the space alongside fellow musicians and peers.

Rapper Snoop Dogg claims to be the renowned high-value NFT collector Cozomo de' Medici and has released several NFTs collaborating with Ethereum-based metaverse gaming world The Sandbox.

Rapper, actor and filmmaker Ice Cube’s BIG3 professional basketball league founded in 2017 has decentralized team ownership via NFT stakes, ones that Snoop Dogg has also invested in.

Nas, another rapper in the crypto world was one of the early investors in Coinbase and has also released music NTFs, via the Royal platform.

Given West’s track record of innovation and extravagance alongside sporting an imaginative artistic flair, the wait is on to discover what NFT ideas or collaborations he has in store for the crypto space.
