Instagram introduces NFT features

Instagram is expanding its non-fungible token (NFT) features across Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas.

The announcement follows a test launch three months ago, in which the social media giant set its sights on introducing NFTs onto the platform.

It was then that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the app will start trialling ways for users to display NFTs on their profiles.

“We're starting building for NFTs, not just in our metaverse and Reality Labs work, but also across our family of apps.

“We're starting to test digital collectibles on Instagram so that creators and collectors can display their NFTs”, Zuckerberg said on May 9.

As of today, Instagram supports Flow, Ethereum and Polygon blockchains alongside third-party wallets from Coinbase and Dapper, as well as Rainbow, MetaMask and Trust Wallet.

“In honor of expanding digital collectible NFTs to 100 more countries on Instagram, I'm sharing my soon-to-be NFT old little league baseball card, which someone recently found and sent to me,” said Zuckerberg yesterday announcing the NFT launch via Instagram.

The new feature will allow Instagram users to include NFTs on their feed and through direct messaging, alongside augmented reality stickers on their stories – the NFT creators and collectors will automatically be tagged.

Although Instagram does offer NFTs to be bought or sold, hints have been made that Meta is working on the development and these services may soon come into place.
