Ethereum developer arrested

Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith has been arrested for attempting to access his Coinbase account in violation of his bail conditions, according to press reports.

Griffith was originally arrested in November 2019 in the wake of a blockchain conference in Pyongyang, North Korea, held in April that same year.

According to authorities, Griffith used the conference as a front for money laundering via cryptocurrency and to skirt US sanctions.

He was charged with conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act but released after posting a $1m bail in December 2019.

However, Griffith has since been arrested at his parents' house in Alabama under suspicion of attempting to access his account at popular cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

Authorities believe that Griffith used his mother's name to access Coinbase, something that his attorney denied, arguing that his client was fully capable of accessing his account without using proxies. Griffith has also denied wrongdoing.

As a result, Griffith is still in custody. If the charges against him are proven in court, he may face up to 20 years in prison.
