As per EGBA’s new code of conduct, all operators will now have to make sure they are complaint with GDPR, EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR).
GDPR was introduced in 2018 to offer better protection to EU citizens and force websites to become GDPR compliant, offering “a right to be forgotten” to netizens who don’t want to have information about them stored online.
EGBA’s code of conduct is a reminder that online gambling remains committed to upholding the highest regulatory standards. As per the new regulatory mechanism, all operators in Europe will have to conduct a review and assess whether they are fully compliant with GDPR.
This is not the first, nor the last, review they would need to conduct as EGBA wants operators to monitor data handling continuously. All operators who request data from consumers for any purpose must explain why the data is needed as well as why it has to be processed.
Any subsequent consent must be given out of the consumer’s free will and with his or her full understanding of why it’s necessary.
Maarten Haijer, secretary general at EGBA, highlighted the importance of data usage, arguing how such information is handled plays an “increasingly important role in how citizens and businesses interact online.”
Meanwhile, the crypto gaming sector has already settled much of the issues that players may experience with disclosing too much information. Some operators, while still compliant with KYC and AML in jurisdictions that require it, enforce the highest safety and security standards with respect to handling consumer data.
Bitcasino.io is one of the oldest and most successful crypto casinos, which offers various promotions as well as the opportunity to play in a complaint environment. It’s also a prime example of how crypto casinos offer customers the choice on how much data they hand over.
In the crypto space, players tend to have a choice of playing anonymously or providing data to assist with marketing and communication from said casinos.
