Dr Bitcoin jailed for P2P BTC sale

Mark Hopkins aka ‘Doctor Bitcoin’ and ‘Rizzn’ has taken to Twitter to announce his prison sentence for peer-to-peer (P2P) Bitcoin (BTC) sales without a federal license.

“I'm going offline for an indeterminate amount of time. I'm headed down to Beaumont FCI, where Uncle Sam will be footing the bill for my room and board for the next six to 15 months for the crime of selling #Bitcoin a few years ago”, read his post uploaded on September 4.

The US Department of Justice has confirmed the sentence but has yet to make further comments.

There has been an ongoing saga regarding the entrepreneur’s crypto operations. In October 2020, Hopkins was raided by 15 armed FBI agents who seized $60,000 worth of electronics from his home.

Following two years of legal proceedings, in June 2021, Hopkins pled guilty to operating an illegal cash-to-crypto scheme.

Yesterday, the self-proclaimed ‘Bitcoin Doctor’ started serving his sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution Beaumont Low, but before he did, he took to Twitter once more to update his followers.

“I'm headed into the facility now, so I'm muting this thread. My Twitter account will be operated by my family while I'm out, so be nicer than you normally are, they're normies not in the cryptotwitter bubble.”
