Crypto.com lands CONMEBOL Libertadores sponsorship deal

Latin American soccer tournament CONMEBOL Libertadores has struck a deal for Crypto.com to become its official sponsor between 2023 and 2026.

Appetite for crypto sponsors in mainstream sports events is growing, as demonstrated by this deal and Crypto.com’s eye-watering $700m naming rights deal with Staples Arena in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Crypto.com will also step in as an official non-fungible tokens (NFT) license holder starting next year, promoting the products to millions of soccer fans in the region.

A special NFT named after the 47th Copa America trophy will be minted and offered back to fans, boosting the hype for the sports and NFTs.

Crypto.com will also become the first crypto brand to benefit from direct integration with the referee system, the Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR).

Commenting on the partnership, Crypto.com said: “Additionally, Crypto.com will benefit from brand exposure in stadiums, activations and broadcasts of the CONMEBOL Libertadores, as well as digital assets.”

Crypto.com co-founder and CEO Kris Marszalek said Latin America demonstrates a strong affinity for crypto, hence the exchange placing a focus on the region.

Some 40% of the region’s residents have said that they are interested in purchasing some form of crypto in the future.

The professional sports world has increasingly looked on crypto firms as potential partners over recent years. The NBA Top Shot solution that offers highlights of basketball games in the form of NFTs is one popular example.

At the same time, the Super Bowl is seeing greater interest from crypto companies who are interested in purchasing slots for commercials during the big game.
