Anchorage to store seized digital currencies

The US Department of Justice's (DoJ) Marshals Service has awarded a $6.6m contract to crypto custody firm Anchorage for storing seized digital assets.

In a statement shared by Anchorage this week, the company said the US Marshal Service has seized significant amounts of digital assets in recent years, creating the need for reliable storage.

In fact, the Service has been holding onto billions worth of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that the DoJ has seized illegal operations over the years.

The DoJ has worked with other law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Drug Enforcement Administration, leading to numerous illegal crypto busts. Some federal agencies can sell seized assets to fund further crime-fighting efforts.

Based on Anchorage's statement, the Marshals Service has been looking for a digital storage over the past few years with efforts beginning in 2019 and culminating with the recent contract.

Anchorage will be tasked with a range of services besides storage, including creating new wallets, looking into airdrops and blockchain forks and posting assets for sale at the request of law enforcement.
